I’ve just discovered, I’ve only ever lived in bridge cities. Cities by the coast, hugging a shoreline, with bridges connecting it to the rest of the world. Think I’ll ever live inland? Nope…
Born right outside of Washington, DC, I spent the first couple years going back and forth across the Arlington Memorial Bridge in DC. Then, Charleston, SC was home for the next 10 years, and there I was 5 minutes from the Cooper River Bridge. Lacking a bit of the culture and education opportunities that my youth afforded me, we moved back to the Washington, DC area. Again, near the coast and near bridges. Throughout my 20s I’ve since lived in cities on the water: Richmond, VA with 5 bridges near by (the Nickel Bridge, the Manchester bridge and the Boulevard Bridge, to name a few); then Philadelphia, PA had the Ben Franklin Bridge, a bird’s eye view to my Downtown Philly Chinatown apartment. Now in SanFrancisco, there’s two I’ve already come to love: The Golden Gate and Bay Bridge.
